Policies & Procedures
The need for standardised delivery of care and service in residential care is not something new, however the increased pressure to ensure its implementation is. Today documented processes of care are the basic requirement of all licensure, certification and quality systems.
But how do we fulfil the requirements? More importantly why should we fulfil the requirements? Is this just a paper exercise? The answer is no!
Correctly identified, developed, and implemented, policies and procedures can provide tangible benefits by focusing on - What are we actually doing? Can we do it better?
The need to understand our processes is core to the provision of a safe and high quality service. Central to this is getting staff involved in discussing our processes, what we do and how do we do it. Through discussion, staff are able to get involved in determining what works and how we can improve it. By documenting our processes in the form of Policies and Procedures staff are forced to consider and agree different aspects of each process.
Policies and procedures are often seen purely as an additional scourge of paper work, and unfairly so. If we use them as a way of looking at what we are doing, seeing how we can improve it, and agreeing how we are now going to do it, they are hugely beneficial.
